Valley along the Alta River in Norway is one of the best places in the world to observe amazing Aurora Borealis. Every winter an igloo hotel is built hosting scientists researching this phenomena. Temperature inside the room is close to 0C, but you will stay warm at night thanks to warm insulated beds. Price also includes morning sauna and breakfast.
Hotel's restaurant serves wild meat from Kautokeino, Karasjok and Tana, fish from nearby fjords, potatoes and vegetables from local farmers, and local berries from nearby woods.
Apart from watching Northern Lights with the scientists, you can embark on dog-sledding and snowmobile adventures, try ice-fishing or visit local Sami family.
Hotel usually opens in December (it's very popular so remember to make a booking early) and lasts until April. The best way to get to here is to take a flight to Alta from Oslo Gardermoen or Tromsø. There is no public transport, but you can either rent a car or book a taxi to Sorrisniva for around 500-700 NOK.
