Both past and present guests of unique hotel Jailhouse Christchurch agree in one thing - it's hard to leave this place. Although probably for different reasons. First ones had to overcome 60 cm thick concrete walls and iron bars. Second ones comfort and great customer service.
Over the years the building has been used as a jail, a woman's prison and a military camp. It was closed in 1999 and remained abandoned until 2006, when it was bought by local couple Kirsty and Grant who renovated the building. Few months later,Jailhouse Accommodation welcomed its first guests who can choose from four cells, including the solitary confinement cell (!) All cells are preserved, there's even prisoner’s artwork decorating the walls! You can admire inmate's drawings of devils, angels, gangsters and... dolphins.
Despite it's name and origins, it is a very comfortable place, especially for travellers on the budget!
