Hotel El-Djazair in Algiers, formerly known as Hotel St. George, is an unique establishment that connects history and luxury. Established in 1889 on the foundations of a Spanish-Moorish palace, the hotel initially catered to affluent English families in Algiers, offering the opulence they were accustomed to. Remnants of the original palace still are present at the property, adding an air of timeless elegance.
By 1918, after World War I, the Hotel St. George had cemented its reputation as an internationally renowned five-star destination, frequented by the global elite. The hotel became a hub for socialites and diplomats, setting the stage for its prominent role during World War II. On June 7, 1942, it hosted a crucial meeting between Winston Churchill and Dwight D. Eisenhower to discuss Allied strategy. Just days later, Eisenhower dined at the hotel with King George V, marking it as a focal point for key wartime events. On November 10, 1942, the hotel hosted a French-American conference where the North African armistice was declared in its opulent dining halls.
During this time, the hotel served as the headquarters for Allied forces, accommodating key figures such as General Eisenhower, Marshal Maitland Wilson, and General Mark Clark. Despite its prominence, the hotel endured significant damage from Allied bombings and was forced to close until extensive repairs allowed it to reopen in 1948. With 180 rooms, it emerged as a charming destination for both tourists and business travelers.
The 1980s marked another transformation. Under the Ministry of Tourism, the hotel underwent renovations and expansions, enhancing its amenities while preserving its historic character. In 1982, it was renamed Hotel El-Djazair, reflecting its Algerian heritage.
Today, Hotel El-Djazair offers a unique blend of old-world charm and modern comforts. Guests can wander through lush botanical gardens, dine on exquisite Algerian and Mediterranean cuisine, or simply immerse themselves in the rich history that echoes through its halls. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or seeking a luxurious escape, Hotel El-Djazair provides an unforgettable experience that bridges the past and present.
