Timberline Lodge, located on the slopes of Mount Hood in Oregon, is renowned for its rich history and iconic role in cinema, particularly in The Shining. The lodge was constructed during the Great Depression as part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) program, designed to provide jobs and stimulate the economy. It was completed in 1937 and dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Timberline Lodge is celebrated for its handcrafted architecture and art, featuring exquisite woodwork and iron designs created by local artisans. In 1977, it was designated a National Historic Landmark for its role as one of the finest examples of WPA mountain architecture.

The lodge's popularity surged throughout the 20th century, with a particular boost from the ski industry in the 1960s and 1970s. By 1981, Timberline had nearly one million annual visitors, prompting expansions such as the construction of the Wy’East Day Lodge. The lodge’s charm remains a significant draw for tourists, with its St. Bernard dogs, a tradition dating back to 1937, and its year-round snow sports offerings.

Timberline Lodge is famous for being used as the exterior for the Overlook Hotel in Stanley Kubrick's The Shining (1980), based on Stephen King’s novel. Aerial shots of the lodge against the backdrop of Mount Hood are seen in the film’s haunting opening sequence. Although the interiors and other aspects of the hotel were filmed in England, Timberline’s exterior became synonymous with the eerie isolation of the fictional Overlook. Interestingly, Kubrick altered the room number from 217 (as it was in the novel) to 237 at the lodge's request, fearing that future guests might avoid staying in Room 217. Ironically, Room 217 remains one of the most requested rooms at the lodge.

The lodge has appeared in other productions as well, including episodes of Hogan's Heroes and the film World War III (1982), further solidifying its place as a notable filming location. Despite its cinematic ties to horror, Timberline Lodge itself has no history of hauntings and continues to attract visitors with its breathtaking setting and historic ambiance.
